Designed in collaboration with Gary Yamamoto Baits and Smith Ltd., the Tail Less Imo Grub is the lure that established the scat bait/tailless grub genre of baits in Japan. Originally conceived as a DIY bait by Japanese anglers who found success in cutting the tail portion off of the classic Yamamoto Grub, the Smith Ltd. designed Tail Less Imo Grub was further tuned and refined to optimize the performance and durability of the original.
Engineered to have a rear center of gravity, the Tail Less Imo Grub offers an enticing sliding fall (backslide) action when rigged weightless, allowing it to be used to target hard-to-reach areas such as under docks, tree overhangs or into the thick of submerged structure. The weight distribution of the lure also provides enhanced casting characteristics, making it suitable for reaching fish further away, allowing anglers to maintain discretion and avoid spooking the fish.
The body design of the Imo Grub was also refined from the original for better hookup ratios. Featuring a perfectly designed taper that allows excellent hooking performance when equipped with appropriately sized offset hooks. For added durability, the head portion of the bait was increased in diameter, reducing the likelihood of tearing when casting or working through snaggy terrain.
With its minimal body design and subtle action, the Smith x Gary Yamamoto Tail Less Imo Grub is a highly effective presentation in high-pressure lakes and ponds. It can be deadsticked or very slowly dragged, a proven bait when fish are under extreme conditions from weather patterns, feeding pressure, and intensive fishing pressure. Other popular rigging options for the Tail Less Imo Grub include a split shot rig and a drop shot rig.
